If you’ve been prescribed a weekly injection as part of your EMPOWER programme, you’re not alone, and we’re here to make sure you feel confident every step of the way.
Here’s what you need to know to inject safely, comfortably, and correctly.
Please note guidance is for those prescribed Mounjaro or Wegovy as part of their EMPOWER programme.
When should I inject?
- Once a week – choose a day that suits you and stick with it
- Any time of day – morning or evening is fine
- You can inject with or without food
What happens if I miss a dose?
If it’s been 4 days or less since you should have injected:
- Use it as soon as you remember
- Then inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day
If it’s been more than 4 days since you should have injected:
- Skip the missed dose, then inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day
- Alternatively, you may inject as soon as you remember but then change your schedule for further injections to one 1 week later and on that same day of week thereafter
Do not use a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose! The minimum time between two doses must be at least 3 days.
Where do I inject?
You can inject:
- The front of your thigh
- Your abdomen (at least 5cm from the belly button)
- The back of your upper arm (if someone can help)
Make sure to rotate your injection site each week to avoid irritation and help your skin recover.
Storage and travel tips
Unused pens:
- Store in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C until you’re ready to use.
- Do not freeze – frozen pens must not be used.
- Check the expiry date – pens kept in the fridge are safe to use until their labelled expiry.
Used pens:
- After first use, store your pen at room temperature (up to 30°C) and away from heat.
- Keep your pen and needles out of sight and reach of children.
- Dispose of the pen 30 days after first use, even if there is medication left.
